Hitman Developer Goes Indie

IO-Interactive Splits from Square-Enix

In an announcement on their site today, IO-Interactive announced their independence. Previously IOI was under ownership from Square-Enix. In their release, IOI revealed that today that a final agreement between them and their former owner.

“Therefore I am proud to announce today that IOI is now officially an independent studio. We have successfully concluded our negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout. Crucially, we will keep all of the rights to the Hitman IP.”

The most important news to come out of the statement is the fate of the Hitman IP. IO-Interactive created and developed the property while under Square-Enix. With IOI going independent it was uncertain whether they would retain the rights, or lose their hit franchise. From their CEO Abrak’s statement, it looks like the fortunes of the studio are bright. IOI will retain the rights to the Hitman franchise along with their newly found independence.
